TWO LEGS, 4 LEGS

TWO LEGS, 4 LEGS

Ohhh! I just loved to watch the 1930's vintage social dancers last weekend at the History of Spanish Village kickoff....celebrating 80 years of artistic existence for San Diego County residents!

Dancers dressed in vintage costumes boogied to songs and music of that glorious era when 'Gone With The Wind' and 'Wizard of Oz' were created.  I watched the dancers interact with dance steps specific to different forms of dance!

Oh! How it would feel to be a 2-legged and dance!

Brandon, my poodle buddy, and I, wag our tails, spin around, and tap our paws for doggy dancing.

We sat next to the cookies and tea, closely watching and hoping for dropped pieces of cookies to eat!

Laurie, Sue and Janet, volunteer artists at the village, spent most of last year researching the beginnings of our village.
Come enjoy what they have to share!

In the photo, Elizabeth, to the far right, is wearing her grandmother's sister's vintage hat!  OOO-LA-LA!

Roots and History are important.

Lai, in studio 26, said there was a Chinese Exclusion Act, during the birth of Spanish Village.
Sylvia, in studio 13, a Native American, said her people were still on reservations.
Jihmye, an African-American, said at that time, Blacks were separated from Whites.

And now, on our 80th birthday, Spanish Village has spread its roots and branches of history to be inclusive to all....providing you are a San Diego County Resident.

It is a colorful and diversified tree.

Trees are good.  They give us shade and something to dig under.

And remember, my dears......

As for the 4-legged villagers, Franklin, the arachnophobic rat, has taken up house with Margaret, who is busily building a nest for their anticipated family.
Erika, the rag doll cat, is becoming quite adept at catching baby mice and roaches...and is eagerly anticipating the arrival of Margaret's babies, bones and all...
Priscilla, the tiger gray, is getting old...I think, sometimes, too tired to catch her dinner.....Brandon, my poodle buddy or I make it a point to keep an eye on her, and drop off a rodent or two for her meals......luckily, since the weather has been warm, we don't have to find dry shelter for her.
All of the villagers look out for each other, one way or another.

CHATTER-CHILDREN AND CLASSES

Summer days last til around 7:30 PM, when the sun sets.

Still, the children's art classes, mornings and afternoons,  give aspiring, young, artists, exposure to clay, painting, mixed media and so much more.

I lie underneath the jacaranda tree, in my cool, freshly dug hole, and listen to the chatter of the children and the birds.  Lunch time is always a special treat because the children are quite generous with sharing bits of lunch....although, I could do without anymore bologna or string cheese.

Come enjoy the Village and rub my tummy!

Love,

Bella

SAND PAINTING

Brandon, my poodle buddy, and I are lying on Mary's cool tile floor. We are relishing the moment Franklin, the arachnophobic rat, discovers the pizza crust he is smuggly nibbling on has a smashed spider underneath it.

Mary Renner, artist Studio 16A

Mary is a sand artist in studio 16A...it is a calm studio, lined with jars of assorted, muted, colored sands of various courseness, from assorted locations. Throughout her studio, she displays sand art depicting containers, objects of nature, wall art and much more .  It is a fading, unique craft that Mary keeps alive. You can drop by and watch her create these wonderful pieces of sand art.

In the meantime, Brandon and I are still waiting on Franklin.
Until Later, take care....Love, Bella

Mary and Sand Art

Sometimes, art takes the form of a painting, so perfect in its strokes and determination that is appears to be a photograph, a technician's creation at painting, and then, there's the colorful strokes and suggestions of an expression performed on canvas, without the technical, but busting out the seams with creativity....however the artist's presents, one hopes for reaction, emotion from the viewer, without it, the artist has failed....
I enjoy going from studio to studio in Spanish Village Art Center, investigating the new artwork, paintings, baskets, sculptures, woodwork, blown glass, pottery, Ramon's guitar playing, and the sound of refrigerators opening and closing....it was all art to me....I was trotting down the main patio, noticing the day was overcast. The art village was sleepy, not quite awake, with few visitors.
I scoped the main patio and noted Ramon and Barbara with their jewelery, Scott and his paintings, Debra with her fused glass barrettes, and a few more patio artists. On such a sleep day, I paused, arched my body from my head to my tip of my tail and shook every hair into place...Oh to be so beautiful!
I spotted Mary, studio 16A, carrying a grocery bag into her studio. ''Hi Bella. Come on over here girl. I have something for you''. She didn't have to say much for me to trot into her studio...
Mary's forte is sand art. Throughout her studio, she has formations of leafs, animal reliefs, 3-d cups & saucers, ornate containers, Egyptian and Asian designs, and so much more.

Mary sits quietly, almost in a meditative form, and sprinkles lightly, thin layers of colored sand over glue, building layer upon layer, on a flat or 3-d surface, to form her picture or 3-D object. It is time consuming, takes fine motor skills and tremendous patience....it is a seldom practiced art. Her work leaves the admirer in awe over how each grain helps create such beauty. Along her walls are small containers of different colored sands, some finer than salt, and some more coarse. She says she collects sands from all over the world. Bella enjoys the stillness of Mary's studio. ''Ready for some left over meat loaf?'' She didn't have to ask me twice. I sat down, like a good dog, and waited for my food. Woof!
